Dr. Alan Bocking graduated from the University of Western Ontario, Faculty of Medicine in 1977 where he obtained specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. As a recipient of an MRC fellowship, he did further research training in the Department of Physiology, Monash University, Australia. In 1985, he joined the University of Western Ontario Faculty as an Assistant Professor where he held continuous MRC/CIHR funding since 1986 and received an MRC Scholarship in 1987. He has been a member of the MRC/CIHR Group in Fetal and Neonatal Health and Development since 1989. He was appointed Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Western Ontario in 1999.

Dr. Bocking’s research has contributed substantially to our understanding of the mechanisms whereby the fetus adapts to prolonged hypoxemia. With other collaborators he has made important discoveries related to biochemical predictors of preterm labour and the mechanisms underlying preterm labour. He has published over 60 original articles in the peer reviewed literature related to his research and has over 90 published abstracts related to his research findings. He has authored and co-authored over 10 reviews and text book chapters related to fetal and maternal health.

Dr. Bocking joined the University of Toronto as Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in April 2003 and also is the Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
